What needs to happen to my hair in order to achieve this?

how do i do this based on my current hair?

I think that his hair is probably around 3-4 inches at the longest part? Its a bit hard to tell from the pic but somewhere in that range I guess.

Really you just need to grow it out.

It looks like the sides and back are quite short so you can probably have any haircut you like for a while in terms of trimming the sides, as long as you are letting the hair on the top of your head grow. Once the top is long enough, then get the haircut:)
