My husband has been taking Tegretol for depression. I feel like they have made him much worse, his personality has completely changed and he's become extremely mean and says things that he would normally NEVER say. I'm wondering if he would be better of taking SSRI's, I don't even know why he has been prescribed Tegretol? Has anyone had a similar experience? Please help, a desperate wife and mother of a new baby...

  1. My husband has been fighting depression as well and he was prescribed some meds that made him worse he got off them and is doing better he also went to a new doctor. I would go see someone and try to help him it is a hard thing to go thru.

  2. Talk to your husbands doctor.  Let him know about how things are at home.  But with a new baby in the home, it may not be the drugs at all.

Men go through a sort of post-partum depression as well.  He may just feel left out and the baby is more important to you now.  also, new baby means more worries and more bills.  men tend to get MEAN when it comes to money.

Also, how old is he?  Many men just go through a phase of "I don't like where I am, I don't like WHO I am, I feel like being an *sshole"  Everyman is different but there may be things going on with him that you are unaware of and he may not feel it is right to share them with you.

Talk to the doctor. and TALK - not argue with your husband.  if he gets mad and starts to argue, just say "I love you too much to argue." and stay calm. :)  Good luck!
