New technology in power generation.  Better solar cells, wind turbines etc.  They are making oil and coal based electrical systems less attractive.  It's a long term trend that should be encouraged.

The invention of machines that can completely sort heterogeneous recycling material is a huge boost to the re-usable material market, because it makes recycling easier and more economically viable.

I'm from Portland, OR...which is rated #2 in the world for being 'Green'. Everything that the rest of the US sees as 'new technology' has been in use for over 20 years in Portland.

The most important discovery recently is 'awareness'. People need to be aware what is happening and how they can contribute to fixing the problem that's going to be a very big threat very soon. Currently we're a little too self-centered to care enough to get things going in the direction to save ourselves. So, we get people aware and concerned about their own actions, then it can be a total combined effort to clean up.

Tree hugger shouldn't be an insult <smile>....
