Question:

What next for England’s now ex-cricket captain Michael Vaughan?

As Kevin Pietersen celebrates his appointment as England cricket captain this afternoon, spare a thought for his predecessor. Only the truly cold hearted could have failed to be moved yesterday as an emotional Michael Vaughan resigned from the post. As the most successful captain in modern memory, the Yorkshireman has much cause to be proud of his achievements.

However, it may be that his resignation has deeper political motives, especially as Vaughan has said that he now wants to take a break from international cricket. Tactically shrewd, likeable, and very media savvy, Vaughan has all the makings of a great politician. Perhaps he now plans to do what Miliband, Harman, and all the other plotters within the Government have not yet had the courage to do, which is - having resigned his position - to run for leader of the Labour Party.

In which case, I expect to see the Brown smear campaign against him to have begun in earnest before the day is out.

  1. I'm not quite sure whether this question is intended to be a joke, or if you have actually got a point.

Vaughan does have a lot of political traits. Look back to "Fredalogate", where it was proven he said it, but completely denied it. He has also been very good at discussing events with the meida without actually saying anything.

I am not too sure about him going into politics in the near futire. That could be a long way off. Vaughan has a lot of business interests, will probably have a lot of offers from the media, and may actually just want to spend time with his family.

As for him joining the Labour Party and running for the leadership; firstly he would be a fool to join any of the political parties in their present guises: each is as bad as the other, and the Labour Party at present is every bit as corrupt as the Conservatives were in the md 90's. It seemed every week there was a fresh political scandal involving them. At least then though it was mainly Cabinet Ministers being caught with their pants down; now it seems to be more getting their fingers trapped in the till, so to speak!

And I don't think Gordon Brown is capable of running a successful smear campaign.

  2. Do you have a link to the article this quote appeared in? I'd like to ready it in it's original context. Thanks.

Anyway. For the immediate future I don't think he has any political ambitions, he's already stated that he wants to concentrate on being with his family, playing for Yorkshire and regaining his batting form. Plus he has all his other interests to look after. After that (when he retires that is), and this is just conjecture, I think he'll probably move behind the scenes and do some work with the ECB in some capacity, possibly becoming involved with the England coaching setup. The head of the ECB Giles Clarke has already expressed a desire to have him involved in someway and I'm sure Vaughan's experience will be invaluable.

But who knows, he could go into politics in the distant future. I just doubt it.

  3. Resign

  4. The Brown smear campaign against him has obviously begun a while back !
