What night insect makes this sound?

I don't have a file for you to listen to. It isn't a cricket cheep or combined trill. I've heard the sound every summer at night all my life, Not a cicada buzz like on a hot summer day.

It is always night. It is like 2 syllables, like ee ee. ee ee. ee ee. Short and raspy. Sometimes they do 3 in a row and seems like they pause when imitated.

What the heck is it?

  1. your moms bed squeakin

  2. could be a frog... but without hearing the sound the ee ee is hard to tell ;)  .. good luck!

  3. It might be some sort of cricket.  This sounds like East Coast stuff and I'm from coastal CA. so I could be wrong.

  4. I hear the exact same thing @ night!!! its annoying!!!

  5. It may be a Tree Toad, looking for a mate.

  6. Your only hope it to track one down, if you're that interested.  Then try to have it identified.  Maybe, you'll discover a brand new species.  They seem to be finding them a lot these days.

If they are like the cricket, the sound is deceiving.  Making it difficult to find the little critters by sound.  Best bet is to just go out with a flashlight, and hope for the best.

  7. It is not an insect.  It is either a tree frog or a toad, such as a green tree frog or a Spring Peeper, which are often mistaken for crickets.  These are in the Midwest too.  There are so many species, it is hard to tell which one this could be.  There are lots of species of tree frogs and toads in North America.  Below are a few links to sounds and images of North American tree frogs.  Perhaps one of them is the sound that you are hearing.

  8. It's a katydid!

They make repetitive sounds in 2's, 3', and sometimes more syllables.  They look like large green grasshoppers, but typically are active at night.

The sound is made by rubbing wings over legs.

They're harmless, just noisy!  Go outside and see if you can find one!

  9. If you deducted that the above mentioned insects aren't the cause then I would say it's a mammal, a bat.

  10. Could it be locusts???
