My pick is "Categorically Unequal" by Douglas S. Massey. This book is numbingly eye-opening.

  1. Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M Pirsig

Classic, mystical, Eastern-American stuff. Love the revelations on a road trip.

  2. Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.

  3. 'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins.

  4. "A People's History of the US." by Professor Emeritus Howard Zinn.  It is the most down to earth, eyeopening, accurate history of this country that you will ever have the good fortune of reading

  5. My choice would be "Night" by Elie Wiesel. He and his father were sent to several concentration camps when Elie was a teenager.

My son or daughter had to read "Night" last fall as part of their summer reading. I read it ahead of time to get a feel for it. I couldn't put it down once I got past the first 5 pages or so.

Everyone should read it. It was way more eye-opening than The Diary of Anne Frank. I was glad the school had it on their list, and I'm glad my child had to read it.

  6. A fascinating biography that is getting a lot of attention is "Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" by Bradley Steffens. It tells the inspiring, true story of a medieval Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method two hundred years before the Europeans learned of it—by reading his books. You can find reviews of the book and a sample chapter at http://www.ibnalhaytham.net/

  7. Everybody onYQA should read "The Elements Of Style", by Strunk & White.

  8. "My experiments with truth".Mr.M.K.Ghandi is not only eye opening but MIND OPENING also.
