Question:

What numbering will Boeing use when they run out of 7's?

So Boeing likes to use 7's in its plane model names, right? Like, 707, 717, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777 and the newest, 787. In about 10-20 years or so, I'm sure 797 will be on the way. So after the 797...what will they do for the model name? Will they move to the 800s? 807? 817? 827? The "Boeing 847"? Haha. Any ideas/thoughts?

  1. A number found between 7 and 8 by a few arithmeticians from MIT, the number is bleem!!!

So it'll start with Bleem27, then go on from there.

    YAAFM

  2. they will add a digit like 2707

(by the way that was their theoretical supersonic transport. )

they won't be changing the middle digit to a letter thats for sure because those are for aircraft in development.

  3. Yeah, i think they will carry on in order...etc 800, 900's.

and you never know, one day there may be a Boeing 847. :)

  4. After 787:  maybe 787-300, 787-400,..... 797-200, 797-300....

  5. Boeing may have given us a hint when they decided on a number for their SST back in the 60s.  It was a totally new direction in aviation and at the time 757 was the next number in their line up but they went with 2707.

The 797 will no doubt be the successor to the 737 and after that comes the replacement for the 747 and 777.  By going with 2707 they'd be paying homage to the classic 707 which started the jet age while signifying a new era in aviation.

Yellowstone is a Boeing Commercial Airplanes project to replace its entire civil aircraft portfolio with advanced technology aircraft. New technologies to be introduced include composite aerostructures, more electrical systems (reduction of hydraulic systems), and more fuel-efficient turbofan engines (such as the GEnx, the CFM International LEAP56 and the Trent 1000). The term "Yellowstone" refers to the technologies, while "Y1" through "Y3" refer to the actual aircraft.

Yellowstone is divided into three projects but are no goint into production in that order.  Y3 has become the 787, Y1 will be the 737 replacement, Y2 replaces the 747 and 777.

Boeing Y1, to replace the Boeing 737 product line. Y1 covers the 100 to 200-passenger market, and is expected to be the second Yellowstone Project aircraft to be developed. It will compete with the Airbus NSR family.

Boeing Y2, to replace the Boeing 767 product line. It may also replace the 777-200.  Y2 initially referred to the highly efficient, more conventional, baseline aircraft for the Sonic Cruiser, which was project "Glacier".  It has now been built as the 787 and covers the 220 to 320-passenger market. It will compete with the Airbus A330, A340 and later A350 families.

Boeing Y3, to replace the 777-300 and 747 product lines. Y3 covers the 300-400+ passenger market, and is expected to be the third Yellowstone Project aircraft to be developed. It will compete with the Airbus A380 family as well as the largest model of the A350 family, the A350-1000 which will be introduced in 2015.

  6. The will never run out of numbers because any new 2 engine planes that are semerla to the 737 will be 737-932 sort of stuff
