What nutrient in meat cannot be obtained from plant sources?

Vegans get their B12 from fortified foods & beverages, most vegetarians get their B12 from dairy.

This is why I ask this question. I don't see why people say a plant based diet is inadequate.

  1. nothing comes to mind..yesterday i was lectured by some old timer how being a vegeterian is bad..i was like blah blah blah these people dont know what theyre talking about ahh! lol

    very good question though!

plus dont look so sad..its making me sad.

  2. B12(cyanocobalamin) cannot be derived from plants but can come from veg sources of bacteria.  Foods fortified with B12 give a good foundation for this vitamin.  Veg sources of B12 can also be obtained from a daily supplement and nutritional yeast.

  3. there aren't any =)

thanks for bringing attention to the fact that a vegan or vegetarian diet is not only adequate, but wonderful!

  4. Cholesterol.

    Or maybe vitameatavegamin?

  5. The only one that comes to mind is vitamin B12.  Supplementation of B12  is strongly recommended to vegans either through supplements or B12 fortified soy products.

Aim for at least 3 mcg of B12 in 2 or more meals per day.  Absorption is best when small amounts of B12 are consumed at frequent intervals

  6. all essential nutrients can be obtained from plant sources, including bacterial B-12, which is actually the primary source of B12 found in animals. (Bacterial B12 exists in the soil, when animals eat grass, they grab this bacterial b12 and absorb it with the grass they eat.)

With this being said a strict vegetarian (vegan) diet should be supplemented to include: calcium (found naturally in plants, but in abundance in dairy), Omega-3's (found naturally in Hemp & Flax Seeds, also in abundance in fish oils), Iron (depending on the actual diet) and B12 (because we tend to wash the "dirt" of our fruits and veggies before we eat them).

therefore the technical answer is that all nutrients in meat can be found in vegetables, though many of these nutrients are found in abundance in meat and may be at scarce levels in vegetables (though certain vegetables may carry ample quantities)
