  1. Probably the closest right answer is minerals.  But, living things can cause chemical interconversions involving these minerals.  A good example is nitrogen.  Nitrate is taken up by plants via the roots.  The nitrate is ultimately converted to ammonia and incorporated into amino acids.  Bacteria can then oxidize this form of nitrogen to different forms.


  2. Water, if it's classified as a nutrient, which I would challenge.
