Question:

What occurences could put ordovician and carboniferous rocks next to each other?

  1. If you had a set of strata representing each of the ages, the  Ordovician would have between it and the Carboniferous the Silurian and the Devonian (in other words, two ages between). If you had a fracture line, such as might occur along a fault, and then elevation of one side of the fracture line so that it rose enough to bring the strata of the two ages together, that would be one way.
