What oil can be used and purchased from a hardware store, in a Bachman HO steam engine?

What basic type of oil can be purchased and safely used to create smoke in my Bachman HO steam engine, rather than ordering from Bachman? Thank you!

When I was younger we had one and used just regular three in one oil but I'm not entirely sure about now.  You might contact your nearest hobby store and ask them they would be more than happy to tell you.
