What old movie is this?

I remember watching an old movie that used to show on Cartoon Network when I was only a kid... perhaps a decade or so ago.

The story focused on a kid in the real world who somehow was either turned into a cartoon or was transported into a cartoon world.

He meets and befriends a couple of colorful characters.. and the small detail I remember is that the group of travellers are each given tests.. one of the characters is told to count grains of sand.

I know it's vague.. but hopefully someone remembers!
