The ability to colonize other planets for human habitation.  Our planet is now so small because of the amount of people it can hold that everyone needs more room.  Building self sufficient domes that can house cities of people would be fantastic.

Low-cost, safe, and abundant energy from nuclear fusion. It would solve the global warming problem, most of our pollution problems, and it would go a long way toward ending world hunger and poverty, and indirectly, territorial conflicts.

I'd love to see hyperspace travel.  I know it sounds like science-fiction, but I do think that one day space travel might be able to get around the limitations of the speed of light.  That way we could observe planets from countless distances away within a human lifespan.

Cures for diseases like cancer and AIDS would be nice, but in reality there are always going to be diseases of some kind, especially as the average lifespan gets older (which is why there were less reports of age-related diseases a century ago; people didn't live long enough to be in the demographic that gets 'em).  More importantly, you're still left with the challenges of how to develop enough of the cure and how to get it out to the people who aren't millionaires.  It was a long time from the invention of the first automobile to the availability of the family-affordable car.

But I would still be happy with a cure for cancer or heart disease, as that is the way that most people die.

I would also be quite satisfied with an effective pill for maintaining a low level of body fat.

But I am being so selfish in my love of technology, so I will choose something more philanthropic. How about this: I hope humanity will be able to travel through space and set up colonies on the other planets of our solar system, study the stars and generally gain a better awareness of the cosmos around us. Superstition has no place in an advancing society.

Mostly, I just hope that we will find and always use testing methods that don't involve helpless animals.
