There is no federal law that restricts *players* from gambling online.  There is a bogus law that limits the way banks transact with gambling sites.  The law also has no means of enforcement, and most likely never will.

its not really illegal for the players.. the DOJ is more after the operators. The only thing you should be worried about is paying the IRA their share.

It is not illegal for Americans to play online poker, unless you live in a state that prohibits it. I know Washington, and a few others have outlawed online gambling. Buit as far as the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) is concerned, it does not affect the players, but the sites who accept money from US players.

That said, most sites don't allow US players, because of the UIGEA. Most of the bigger rooms still accept US players, though. Full Tilt Poker, Ultimate Bet, Poker Stars Doyle's Room and Absolute Poker still welcome US players. My preference is Full Tilt Poker, because I think they have the best tournaments and software. I have been playing there since they first opened.

Just make sure you pay taxes on any big cashes you might win.
