I know craigslist and ebay, but I wondered if there was a site specifically for musical instruments?

  1. Unless it is an inexpensive student violin, it will be challenging selling it through a website.  People want to see, hear and play the instrument, because even two instruments of the same model by the same maker will be different from each other.  It is cumbersome to respond to many different ads and go many different places to try instruments and see if you like them.

My recommendation would be to check your local yellow pages for a dealer who will sell the instrument on consignment for you.  They can be much more efficient at unloading the instrument, because musicians typically come and try many instruments at one time in order to pick out what they like.  They will probably be able to get more for the instrument than you will, so their percentage of the sale won't hurt so much.

Another option is to contact orchestra directors at local schools regarding the instrument you have for sale.  If you can get them to allow you to come to them so they can see the instrument, they may be able to recommend a buyer for you.
