What options do you have if you get permanently DNIF in the Air Force?

I've been a flier for three years now and have been struggling with reoccurring headaches. I take a certain medicine that needs a waiver, but the doctor said the waiver probably won't go through. So, my question is... What happens if I get permanently DNIF? Will I get reclassed or will them make me some sort of ground crew? Or will they keep me here and give me a paper pusher job?

  1. Hopefully this will be moot, but bro-to-bro:

Why are you asking this here, instead of talking with your Flight Commander/Sqdn Commander?  You're going to need them behind you when you retrain.  Start thinking about what you wish to do, before the Blue Machine decides for you.  Start talking with your Career Advisor if you haven't already-they need to know and can maybe work a deal for the career manager in the AFSC you want.

  2. Do you have a secondary AFSC, if so that is where you will be going back to.

If not, you may be given the opportunity to retrain. Start looking now at what you would like, and what is available and you are qualified for. If you wait you will get what is left or the AF will decide for you.

Or you may be given an early release out of your contract if you do not want to retrain or have enough retainability for retraining and choose not to reenlist.
