Question:

What options in Mexico do you have for high speed internet?

I am from the US and operate a business from my home. I would like to at least visit Mexico for a year.

Because of the work I do, I need a very fast connection. Wireless internet is not sufficient. I would need to be hard-wired to a cable connection, or be directly connected to a cable line. Is this something that is available in Mexico? If so, is it reliable? Is is available in most areas there?

  1. prodigy infinitum

  2. We have Telmex "infinitum" check out the webpage for different speeds they have or by cable if you live in a medium size city Megacable, Telecable, Cablemas, etc.

I work with infinitum from home as well, and it's pretty reliable.

  3. There are several options to get broad band connection, there are many cable companies offering the kind of service you are looking for, they include cable tv and broad band internet; of course there is service from Telmex, the major phone company in México (but not the only one), they call "prodigy infinitum" their broad band service; although it is not available everywhere.

And there is another option less known, the option I have; Iusacell company (a celullar company) has the BAM service (Banda Ancha Móvil or "Mobile Broad Band"), wich is NOT wireless internet, wich depends on "hot spots"; it works with the cellular antenas, it gives you the same mobility as a celular phone (it means, you get service where there is celular service, even outside the cities). It works either as a broad band or as a regular band, according to the quality if the celular signal. Where I live it works much more better than any hard line. I'm at a dairy farm in central México, 40 kilometers from the city and 8 kilometers to the closest phone hard line. This was the only option for me, but I'm VERY happy, it has an awesome service here. Again, I said HERE. Now, Telcel company, the competion company of Iusacel, has BAM service too; but where I live it doesn't work very well.

To be more helpful, you should tell us where are you going to be, 'cause at this country you can have the same kind of lifestyle you have at USA in a certain site, and one hour from it you could see a place in a poverty like Africa. The service you can get dependes on where you are going to be.

  4. Cablemas have a lot of promotions and it depends what deals they are giving at the time you want to connect.

I had high speed and cable for $580.00 pesos al month $200.00 of that for 1.5 mg and was very good service.

  5. Here in Cancun...we have TelMex 2.0 and Cablemas. Both high speed and reliable. My husband works from home as well.

    Hope this helps!

  6. I'd like to point out that the connection speeds that TelMex advertises with their infinitum service are not even remotely close to what I actually got. That being said, I was in a small town, Chicxulub Puerto, YU. The speed was good enough for me to work there all the same though.

The package we signed up for advertised 1 mbps speeds, however, I was typically getting about 650 kbps download and 100 kbps upload speeds. This year when we return we are going to upgrade to the 2 mbps package. While I don't expect to get anywhere near 2 mbps I am hoping that it will be faster.

I'd guess that larger cities would have better service.
