What or who is ngee ann?

I've been wondering who is ngee ann or what does the word mean.i go to takashimaya a lot and i've seen the polytech with the same name.i've searched the internet for a while and i couldnt find anything.

Ngee Ann is a cooperative formed by the Teochews of Singapore.  In the early days they help the poorer Teochews who just arrived and later especially in terms of education.

The site of Ngee Ann City where Takashimaya is today belongs to Ngee Ann Kongsi.

As they were involved in helping education, schools and other institution were built using the Ngee Ann name - hence you have Ngee Ann School, and Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
