  1. That's never an easy task, and there are a lot of factors involved? What's the story that affects the most people? Will it be interesting to viewers? In television, are there good pictures involved? Is there someone to at least interview on the story?

    The same process goes on at newspapers, of course, without the visual element. But, photography can factor into a story's play as well.

  2. before the news airs, producers and directors have a budget meeting and during this meeting the order in which the stories will air is decided. have you ever heard the term "if it bleeds it leads"...producers really use this when deciding where to air a story.

    generally, the gorier he story the higher up it is in the broadcast. ever noticed how a high speed pursuit, shootings, wrecks, violent crimes, and fires are the first stories to be aired. unfortunately, the bloodier or more violent the story, the more people want to see it. how many times have you passed a wreck and not broken your neck trying to see how bad it is. ever have a police car pass you with lights and sirens and you secretly didn't wonder what had happened. how many times has a story about o.j., lacy peterson, stacy peterson, etc. been buried in the news broadcast. if it bleeds, it leads.

  3. The stories which appear in a newspaper or news broadcast "budget" get there because they fit one or more categories called "news values." these values include the frequency with which an event occurs. bad news, unexpectedness, human interest, proximity, magnitude and conflict.

    ther factors which help shape the news are an event's fidelity to  a preexisting "narrative," continuity, packaging a mix of domestic and foreign news (once upon a time, relying on foreign stories  with little local interest was called "Afghanistanism, because nobody cared what went on there);

    competition with other media outlets; stories that are related to main stories, time and financial constraints; and what advance copy is available.

  4. it's more of importance that factors in the order they're put it goes in this order usually headlines then top stories then the weather,entertainment,etc.... and then it starts all over again but then they add one or two more headlines and then follow up on their top stories
