What organizations can I get involved with that promote home schooling?

I'm really disgusted that the government wants to take away our rights to home school our kids. At the very least they are trying to make it harder for a parent to "qualify" to home school their kids. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for the many good teachers out there. But if my kids are passing tests and doing well, then it's none of the governments d**n business if I don't have some certification or degree. The point is, is my kid learning or not?! And if he is...then why mess with a good thing?? I am so passionate about this and I want to do something about it. How do you go about fighting for a cause? What are some causes you are passionate about? What have you accomplished? How did you get started? I'm sick of complaining about things I don't like. I want to do something constructive about it. And even if I don't succeed, at least I'll have the peace of mind to know that I tried. Please share your thoughts on this. THANK YOU!!!

  1. I totally agree. I have twins in year 5 and there both being bullied and one has been signed off school for 4 weeks due to stress. The school just wont take it on board !! My 4 yr old is due to start in September but ive decided i will teach him from home. I dont know where im gonna start or get resources from but he is not going threw that!! The education board keep sending me forms to put him in different schools but im just ignoring them. I feel they are trying to force me in to sending him.

  2. Promote homeschooling? "Why" is the question?

If you feel it's good for you and your family, that's great....

But I don't think homeschooling should be promoted or defended....

However I am biased, because I don't like homeschooling....

But I suggest you keep it to yourself....

    =)

  3. First of all, what state are you in? Although homeschooling is legal in all states some have stricter laws and regulations than others.  If possible, become a member of HSLDA; their website is www.hslda.org.  Just click on your state under state laws and you'll find the requirements for your state. If the school board or anyone else gives you any hassle for homeschooling, they will represent you in or out of court, and they usually resolve any problems before it goes that far.  It's a great peace of mind to know you have homeschool lawyers to back you up whenever there's any problems.  If you can find one, you may want to join under an umbrella school; that way you won't have to register with the county at all.  Most of them are Christian-related though, and may require you to sign a statement of faith. Type homeschool resources on Google and you'll find a lot of help there.  You might also try typing homeschool help, homeschool umbrella schools, etc..

Unfortunately, a lot of people are still ignorant about homeschooling and the only way to change that is to inform them with facts.  I've often thought about starting a homeschool awareness group where the goal was just that: to inform the public about the facts and myths of homeschooling, and to make them aware of the benefits that come with it based on documented research, by having homeschool awareness workshops and meetings. However, I just don't have the time at the moment, but its something I'm hoping to do in the future.

Good luck with everything!  The only way to change anything is to fight for it.

  4. I believe you're misinformed and have heard the media's spin and HSLDA's (and others) "Chicken Little'ing" of the California court case.  It was ONE case with ONE family.

California, nor any other states, has NOT passed a low to "take away our rights" or to make us have certification as home educators.  Do you know that PRIVATE school teachers in CA do not have to be certified?  Do you know that HS's ARE private schools in CA?

You are free to join HSLDA or the organization representing the school the kids in the court case were under.  I don't even recall the name of it because I threw it in the trash.  I don't know how they got my name.

HSLDA is doing their typical "fear mongering"  so that they can increase their membership and look like the ones who "won".
