Question:

What origin does chao (as in bye) come from?

what origin does this word have .my teacher taught us that that meant bye in spanish but (im mexican and ilready know spanish) have never heard that word used in mexico to mean bye. i know peru and venzuela are most commen to use that word but i've never heard it used in mexico. what origin does chao have? french???
