What other aspects of life would you find vegetarians attracted to?

Question

For example, today I found out that a significant ( way above national averages ) number of Esperanto speakers are vegetarians.

Are veggies more likely to have certain polical leanings, own allotments, be teachers, drive JCBs, own pets, like Cold Play...

That sort of thing.

This is not to "generalise" vegetarians, I'm just interested in which other topics interest them, the increased interest in Esperanto is proven, so its not generalisation.

The more seemingly unrelated topics the better ;-)

I assume that the Esperanto connection comes from the fact that Esperanto speakers tend to be from A-B social classes, have left-of-centre politics and are free thinkers - all those groups tend to have a higher veggie population ( by survey, not guesswork ) than national averages.

so, where have you come across more vegetarians than you would have normally expected ?

I have a strong interest in foreign languages(though lack the time) and other cultures.

I don't find my nation or race to be superior to any other.

I am further "left" than will ever be acceptable in the US.

I am neither spoiled nor well-off, neither of my parents are financially independent.

I would have guessed that my place of origin, the San Francisco Bay Area, would have a high percentage of vegetarians, but I had only met a handful before I left after living there for 24 years.

"Hardcore" or "straight edge" kids seem to have a high percentage of veggies but they aren't really a social group that would stand the test of time. People that follow Hinduism, Jainism or Hare Krishna are the only groups I can think of that will be notable generations from now.

I would like to go green.  When we buy a house we will also be self sufficient when it comes to electricity.  We plan to be "off the grid".  We want to have a HUGE garden that can support our family.

I've noticed that there are MANY more teenage vegetarians than there were 5yrs ago (i'm guessing because it's the current trend) so I guess simply by being around other teens you'll encounter more vegetarians.

There might be more vegetarians working for organizations such as greenpeace, the RSPCA and WSPA and there might be more vegetarians in certain religions, but not sure which ones.

I personally have never came across many vegetarians or vegans other than myself and an online friend.

I think you answered your own question.  Vegetarians tend to fall into two categories:  

1.  Those who are doing it because their friends do it, or because they see it as rebellious or trendy.

2.  Those who actually read up on the reasons for being vegetarian or at the least more conscious of what they eat.

The latter of the two tend to fit more into the description you have outlined.

I work in market research so have to analyse this sort of data all the time. Correlations very often come back to class and age.

With veggies, the majority of correlations will be down to the fact that they are more ABC1- higher intelligence and education, as you already said. Also they are generally younger (under 45) and there's a female skew, so anything that goes along with that. But also, for some it's a religious thing, so things that go along with that religion will score higher for veggies.

But here are a couple of random ones about veggies- they dislike housework more than usual and they're more likely to drink for the sake of getting drunk!

Here, I see mostly kids.. Pampered, Western born and raised, some well meaning, sometimes spoiled children on a crusade whose purpose perhaps they don't yet fully understand. Hence the occasional rude or insensitive comments or the lack of tolerance and accommodation to those who do not share their "beliefs" At least I think they are children. I hate to think that adults behave like that though deep down, I know some do.

But that's just  here on Y!Answers only. Outside, I really have not seen any obvious distinctions as to arrive at any stereotypical conclusion.

Nowadays, when I think of vegetarians, I think of people I can charge an almost embarrassingly large sum of money for a simple but well presented vegetarian pre fixe three course menu (excluding drinks).  Don't worry, I charge omnis even higher!!

1) Overhelming response of youth & teenagers in Y!A V&V section; They zealous to be vegetarians (though silly), but not blessed by parents. Pity them.

2) Increasing "visitors" in V&V. I guest more people are anxious to know what’s really going on at another part of the world; It’s that the common trend that the world going through nowadays. Many of them even know the term "veganism" – surprisingly!

3)Increasing number of vegetarian products, outlets, restaurants, foodstalls and websites.

3)When I come across with many statistics and facts nowadays, most scientists, philosophers, thinkers, environmentalists, peace makers, spiritual leaders, human rights & animals rights advocators are vegetarians. And even many male celebrities are opting vegetarian lifestyle nowadays. It was some point of times i ever wondered "vegetarianism" is the most stupid thing that I ever made in my life, but now I realize that - not that stupid!

I think that vegetarians tend to be more left-leaning in their politics, but I know that the former Republican Senator from Iowa, Fred Grandy, is a vegan. I think that many of them are environmentalists and animal rights activists, but I also know that some people become vegetarians because of the health benefits. I think many of them are more likely to have pets. I think their musical tastes vary. After all, there are members of Def Leppard who are vegetarians, and I remember once reading something about Willie Nelson drinking soy milk, but I don't know if he's veg. I think the Esperanto thing is really interesting, though. I'm a vegetarian and I have a degree in Spanish. I have an interest in foreign languages myself, though I don't go for artificial languages like Esperanto. I think the Esperanto thing sort of makes sense, though, because Esperanto is supposed to be a language that transcends borders. I think vegetarians are often idealistic and like things that they think promote international peace and cooperation, and I think many vegetarians' interest in Esperanto may be a reflection of this.

Well, i know that many Hindu and generally people from India are vegetarians, at least much above average.

I would guess that veggies lean towards the left politically (democrat) and are more environmentally conscious, so they probably tend drive more fuel-efficient cars.  They are also more health-conscious, so they are likely not overweight and probably exercises regularly.

i think they tend to be more liberal, more concerned about the environment, more health concious....

they probably have pets cuz they like animals.

i'd say music, religion, everything else can vary a lot though.

I have noticed that a lot of vegetarians care for the environment..

Oh and :D hehe I am interested in astrology and it usually says people who have Venus in 12th house love and care for animals, which can lead to vegetarianism (i have that aspect and so does my friend, we are both vegs) Oh and if people have aquarius sun then usually they are vegetarians - ok enough astrology talk

Haha, I know some people here are going to think I'm wrong since I believe in astrology and all.. oh well

Also, a lot of gothic, rockers, and emo people I know tend to be vegetarians/vegans.. Hmmm
