First-time car buyer here; i'm unaware of the whole process. Are there other costs involved when buying a car, like switching the title over to me? is that my expense or the previous owner's? and the tag? will registration cost me anything? how is it done, does the owner have to go to the dmv and request that the title is switched to my name? do i pay first? If someone could explain the car-buying process to me that would be great.

  1. yes u have to pay for registration and title transfer and also tax on the vehicle i just recently did a private sale and i didnt realize everything i think thats all tho but if u are doing it at a dealership u will pick out ur car they will make up some payment options for you then take u in the finance office and u will pay the registration fee and i think the tax is rolled into your payment and once the car is paid off u will get the registration but if u are paying outright or with a private sale what i said before would apply

EDIT: if u dont have ur own insurance then it will have to go in ur moms name and yes u will have to have proof of insurance when u get the title transfered into ur name or momsname whoever is carrying the insurance chances are u are on their insurance already so u can drive their cars legally

  2. All the seller has to do is show you a clear clean title, in his name and no liens against it, and sign in the seller spot.

All expenses from there on, insurance, taxes, registration, title transfer fees, are yours to pay.

  3. Most states have the following:

    Tax an purchase price

    Title fee

    Registration

    Lien fee (if financed)

    If from a dealer add:

    Documentation fee

If buying from most dealers they will do everything at their place.

If buying privately, you will pay the person selling the car, obtain the title, take title with your drivers license and proof of insurance to the DMV and process the ownership transfer and get your plates.

If from private seller, make sure the car title has no liens on it, and if the back says notarization required for the signatures, make sure it is notarized or the DMV will not process.  Good Luck
