  1. I use conferencing in language to really get to know my students. Meaning, I have one on one time to understand what they are reading and where the gaps are.  After meeting with all my kids, I can usually pick up patterns of what help kids need and I use that to somewhat guide my instruction the next day or pull out a small group to teach.

I also use journaling a mode of asessment. I can easily track their growth from their journals of work. I do this for both math and language.

I also use observations. I usually have a skill or several skills that I am looking for and monitor which students are exhibiting those skills and track than in a notebook.

  2. There are portfolio assessments, anecdotal records, projects and presentations with rubrics, etc.

  3. In Math we have something called Explorations where students work with different math tools  such as thermometers and Place Value blocks and such. I walk around and make note of students that can do the assignment and those that are having trouble.
