  1. Any lens with an AF motor in the lens should be able to autofocus on the D40.

    See the link below for a larger list of compatible lenses for the D40 (it says D60 on the page, but the D60 and D40 both lack an in-body AF motor.

  5. Almost any lens. Sigma, and tamaron lenses work great. Make sure they have an auto-focusing motor built in to the lens. On Nikon this is called AF-S and AF-I.

    Technically, any lens can be used. Just some will be limited to manual focus.

    If you were to go for the Nikon D80, any lens could be used, since the D80 has an AF motor built in.
