What other olympic events can a person earn 8 medals in?

Yes, but it's next to impossible. Men's gymnastics.

One could win the team medal, individual all-around medal, and all six event finals for a total of eight medals. But like I said, that would be next to impossible.

No not really. Maybe the closest thing is track and field but that would be extremely difficult.

There are only 2 other sports in which one could even realistically achieve this: track and men's gymnastics.

In track the distance events 400m and less would be the opportunity.  The specific events would be: 100m, 200m, 400m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4x100m, 4x400m, and the long jump.  This would be several times more difficult than getting 8 swimming medals and is highly unlikely to ever be achieved.  On the women's side, they have similar events, except the hurdle distances are different.

In men's gymnastics, you could win all 6 event finals, the all-around, and the team gold.  Again, this would be 10x tougher than 8 swimming medals.  If you are the fastest swimming or track star, there is margin for error in a particular race.  If you make a mistake (bad start), you can make up for it.  If you are the best gymnast and you make one mistake in an event final, your quest for 8 golds is over.

I don't get why they can't award medals for whoever wins the most events in swimming. They have to give medals for each of these different events.
