My 2 fish are both 2" each, are in a 30 gallon tank and i will put them in 500 gallon when bigger with the arowanas, alligator gars, and cichlids. But i just want to know what other things do you feed your jack dempseys and oscars besides pellets and prepared fish food and when should i start feeding rosy reds to oscar and jack dempsey. or how big should they be.

  1. My tigar oscar enjoyed going after live brine shrimp, it was a treat for him.

  2. Your Jack Dempsey and Oscar will love meaty foods!  Aside from the frozen bloodworms, beef heart and meaty formulations for Cichlids at the LFS, I have also added some fresh fish meat from the grocery store.  One thing tho, my Oscar ate a piece of fresh shrimp and the piece was too big, it got stuck in his mouth and he couldn't close it!  I have to be very careful with him! I had to take him out of the tank and take the food out of his mouth, he was just a young fellow.  Make sure the pieces are small enough!  Also, they will enjoy live worms, again make sure they are small enough!  I didn't feed mine live fish, but you will be able to do this.  I think that they are still quite small for this, especially since the Oscar will not even consider that he wouldn't be able to fit them in his mouth!  So just figure out what size of foods fit comfortably in his mouth before you add larger pieces!

Good luck and Happy fish keeping! :)

  3. Blended beef heart, earthworms, shrimps as well as cichlid pellets, peas and lettuce are all good alternatives to keep your Oscar on a balanced diet. An Oscar needs a variety of foods with high protein in order to stay healthy.
