What other way is there other than SIM cards?

What other ways are there to have a phone number, or network service? I mean is SIM card the only way to have a phone number or your mobile phone? Or any other methods used everywhere around the world. I'm only use SIM card in hOng knong.

CDMA phones dont use simcards so if you dont need a simcard then buy a CDMA phone from a CDMA carrier.
