  1. Ibuprofen.  It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

You can find ibuprofen in generic form, which would be the cheapest way to go.  Or you may buy it in a brand name, such as Advil, Motrin, and Nuprin.

Aspirin also has anti-inflammatory properties.  You can find that generically, or you may buy a brand name aspirin, such as Bayer's.  Aspirin is more likely to upset your stomach than ibuprofen, but if it doesn't bother you, it's inexpensive and it works.

Aleve is also another NSAID that can help.  Its active ingredient is naproxen.  However, this medicine can increase your risk of life-threatening heart or circulation problems, including heart attack or stroke. This risk will increase the longer you use Aleve.

If the swelling is due to an allergy, these products will not work.  In that case, try Benadryl.  If you are having a serious allergy and you are having trouble breathing, go to your ER immediately.

  2. Depends why whatever is swollen is swollen.

If its an allergic reaction go for Piriton, Benadryl or another anti-histamine.

If its from trauma, have an anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen (Nurofen).

    HTH

  3. Tylenol or Panadol

    Advil or Motrin

    Aleve or Naprosyn

    Aspirin, Bayer or Bufferin

  4. Depends on the cause of the swelling. Typically, swelling is caused by inflammation. In such cases, any NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) will work to HELP reduce swelling, but may not neccessarily make it go away. A typical example of this is Ibuprofin, which can be found in lots of strengths, in many products. Also, any related drug will work. Ask your local pharmacist, and they can point you in the right direction. Take care!
