I'm going to paint my room, here is what the framework looks like...

P.S. I can't paint it, my mother says it's "good" wood, even though I think it's uglier than ever...

  1. You don't have to match your woodwork to your wall color.  Quite the opposite, actually.  Think of it in terms of Hollywood make-up:

    Wood trim = black mascara.

An actress or model can wear any color blush, eye shadow, etc., but their black mascara (the final touch/trim) is always a constant.

Think in terms of a color SCHEME, too, vs. what color should be used.  Consider colors that you love, but then be careful ... a lot of people make the mistake of using too much of their favorite color in a space, and then it becomes their least favorite pretty quickly.

I always recommend finding an inspiration piece (like a throw pillow, a bedding piece, a scarf, a fabric swatch, or whatever) then working out from there.  Let's say you love purple and you find a throw pillow that's like this:

(This, of course, is only an example).  With this, you could paint the walls a soft green color then accessorize in purple and some of the other colors.  The green walls will 'support' purple accents quite nicely.

    Your sheets could be this:

This picks up all of the colors in the pillow but offers a variety because it's striped.

Your comforter, bedspread, or duvet could be this:

Picking up a rather recessive color in the scheme and bringing it forward.  This is a tone-on-tone print, so again, it offers some variety without causing chaos.

Add some plain purple throw pillows,

an area rug (this one even picks up on that small amount of orange/red in the pillow),

and maybe use an eclectic, antique-type bedside lamp (see the 5th one down),

You get the idea.  In the end, the wood work will be an excellent framework for what you're displaying IN the room.

    Hope this was helpful.

  2. The wood is neutral, so you can choose any color. I like a contrast, so a sage or blue would work. Or, try a decorative painting scheme. You can learn these at home improvement stores and they are fun to do.

  3. I hate people who paint lovely natural woods. You can paint the walls any color you like and it will blend nicely.

I want very very light aqua for my walls, slightly on the greenish side of the blue/green scale and a darker shade for the ceiling. My floor is brick red with white grouting. If I use orangy tans and browns for the furniture it will all work really well.

Think of your favorite colors and keep them muted to very soft pastels for large areas. Then you can use brights for the accents.

  4. A turquoise/blue would look nice.

    Good Luck! :]

  5. Actually, natural wood is considered a neutral so any color you like would coordinate. The wood you have is a warm brown so you can either choose warm colors for a cozy feel like peach, red, apricot, rose, a goldy yellow or a lime green. The only warm colors I would avoid are cinnamon or a true orange because they are too close to the wood color and would be boring. Save those colors for accessories.

For more contrast, you could choose cooler colors like a turquoise or teal blue, lavender, plum, or a light navy blue. These colors would really pop with the natural wood color.

The natural wood is essentially an orangey tan so whatever color of walls you choose, you can make it work by getting curtains or toss pillows and accessories that have the same orange tones along with a brighter version of your wall color in them. Don't worry, your room will look great!! : )
