Unfortunately, it varies from state to state, and that's assuming you're in the USA.  Try calling the Department of Education in your state and ask your question to them.

Don't bother calling the state to see what you need... they're often uninformed and want parents to jump through hoops they don't need to jump through!

Check out www.hslda.com to find your state and see what the requirements are.  It can range from lots of paperwork and documentation (like in New York and Pennsylvania) to no paperwork and documentation (like in Connecticut and Texas) to somewhere in the middle.
