  1. A doppelgänger or fetch is the ghostly double of a living person, a sinister form of bilocation. The appearance of an individual in two places simultaneously. What exactly occurs in the phenomenon of bilocation is uncertain. The prevailing theory suggests that it is a projection of a double. In appearance to others the double may appear to be a solid physical form, or may be ghostly. Usually this double acts strangely and mechanically and does not acknowledge others when spoken to.Although it is uncommon, bilocation is an ancient phenomenon. It is claimed to have been experienced, and even practiced by will, by mystics, ecstatics, saints, monks, holy persons, and magical adepts.

  2. First add the numbers together in 1408 and see what number you end up with. This is a play on an old theme (room 13, floor 13, etc.)

Next, the St, James Hotel in Cimarron, NM (I have included the official link below) has a room 13 that is closed to the public because of claimed paranormal events. An internet search will turn up some groups that investigated the hotel and room.

Most movies are composites of stories heard and imagination, even when based on "true stories" and 1408 makes no such claims to truth. I'm sure other hotels would fit the story in some ways as well.

  3. The Dolphin Hotel is actually taken from a Japanese story called "A Wild Sheep Chase" which contains a haunted hotel with this name.

It plays on the fact that lots of hotels have claims of haunting. I have never heard anything as extreme as 1408 however. Mostly there are reports of people being touched by ghosts, seeing ghosts walking down hallways, strange sounds.

It happens a lot with large airy fancy hotels, and its probably partly due to the feeling of being overwhelmed by a large airy space, strange lighting from fancy chandeliers, etc.

Also, I think they embellish some of it to attract people.

  4. None,If any hotel does close off rooms.I'll bet a paycheck it's a gimmick.Think about it.paranormal investigators  are all over the place.Checking out buildings all over the world.Books, TV,documentaries all kinds of media. If there was a room, wouldn't it be on all of that? How would a hotel keep that secret. Why would they? They could make a fortune renting it out to ghost hunters.Think about it!
