Question:

What parental rights do step-parents have?

I am finding out that Step-parents are giving certain rights via the bio parent they are involved with, so if they give permission its okay. Seems to out rule me the custodial parent everytime.

all answers are welcome here and thanks for your opinions.

  1. None, Nada, Zip, Big ol' 0.

  2. I believe that, unless they have adopted the child, they have no parental rights.

For example, my husband and I are getting divorced. His girlfriend cannot decide to go pick up my child at daycare, nor will she be able to ask for medical or school information when he goes to school. She has no say and no right whatsoever in my child's life.

If you have sole legal custody, the other parent cannot give the OK to their new spouse, since they don't have the right to take decisions about your child.

  3. As far as I can tell, they have none.

My stepfather married my mother when I was 17.   They had been in a relationship since I was 14.

He was extremely abusive towards me in ways I can never forget.

He tries to be somewhat nice now but I'll probably always have memories of the things he said and did.

There was no justification for it.

He pretended that it was "discipline"...when in reality, it was abuse.  I'm now an adult.  My mother continues to be in denial and makes excuses for his behavior.

Sorry that I shared so much information but this is something that really bothers me.   I don't think step-parents should  have much of a say in how their stepchildren should be raised, as long as there is reasonably good behavior and rules are followed.

  4. None, nada, zilch. The step-children should be made to respect them (by their biological parents), but as far as disciplining and other parental rights, they should have none.
