  1. Native Indian tribes and Spain.

  2. Mexico. Before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 1600s, there were thriving civilizations in Mexico. The Mayans, the Incas, and others that go far back into the pages of time.

  3. Before it was called Mexico it was called "The New Spain", because it was conquered by the Spanish conquistadors.

  4. Mexicans are a blend of Spanish and Native Americans.

  5. Obviously the Spanish conquerors came from Spain.  The original inhabitants most likely came across the Bering Land Bridge during the last ice age from Asia.

  6. Mexico is predominantly a mixture of aboriginal North American populations and Spanish.  However, other ethnic groups are represented in large numbers as well.

The aboriginals would have come into Mexico mostly from the north after crossing the Bering Strait from Siberia in present day Russia.  The Spaniards came from Spain to  Mexico after Cortés arrived in 1519 in order to invade the country .  The Archduke Maxmillian of Austria was installed as emperor of Mexico by a French invasion force supported by conservative Mexicans.  A lot of assorted Europeans would have settled in Mexico around this time.

The population of Mexico is about 30 per cent aboriginal in origin, comprised of the Maya, Zapotec, Otami and Mixtec peoples.  Another 55 per cent of the population of Mexico is "mestizo", of mixed European and aboriginal descent.  Another 16 per cent are called "criollos", and are of European descent.

A fair number of Moroccans of Jewish descent settled in Mexico following hostility that ensued in Morocco from the creation of the state of Israel in 1848.  I met a guy who claimed to be Mexican through and through in origin but he had a Dutch last name and was not sure how it had made its way into the country.

  7. The Conquistadors of Spain?

  8. The Mexica was the dominant tribe of the Aztecs at the time of the Spanish conquest (1519). According to their legends they originated from a place called Aztlan (which means place of the Herons). They had gone on an migration until they found a place with an eagle eating a snake on a cactus (which is pictured on their flag) to found their city (Mexico City).

The location of Aztlan has been a source of a lot of speculation by historians. Supposedly the natives did not remember where it was. It has taken on a very symbolic meaning for many people. Some scholars believed that it was in the Southwest United States so the Chicano movement sometimes uses it as a symbol for the reclamation of the lands that were stolen by the US in the 19th century.

The "official government" position is that Aztlan was a small lake near Puerto Vallarta.
