I live in Illinois and we've been side swiped by alot of really bad weather and I have a feeling we are gonna get hit by one sooner then we think.

  1. The most inner part of the house's basement is what I've heard.  It used to be said that the southwest corner was the best due to the direction of most of the wind, but studies have shown that is not accurate.  The home could get pulled off of foundation and that corner could be extremely damaged.  So in result, best spot would be in the most central place.

  2. The safest place would be like under a stairwell or sturdy piece of furniture.  This would be to protect you from any debris that may fall into the basement.
