  2. The closest state to Toronto is New York state. It‘s about a 1 ½ hour drive south on the QEW highway to the border. The city of Buffalo, New York is right across the border from Ontario, Canada. Pennsylvania is just a short drive to the west of Buffalo, but there’s not much in that area, mostly just small villages and wilderness. To the east of Buffalo is the city of Rochester, NY. Western New York state is located in the American “rustbelt”, so most of the cities there are older industrial cities that are not as nice as they used to be, but there are still lot’s of nice areas to visit. It’s about an 8 hour drive on the highway to New York City from Buffalo. NYC is a great city so if you have enough time, I’m sure you would enjoy the trip.

If you don’t want to travel too far from the border area, there is a nice village outside of Buffalo called East Aurora. There isn’t a lot to do there, but it’s very pretty. It has a traditional “all American” town feel to it, so if you would like to experience that, it’s worth the visit. On the American side of Niagara Falls, you could visit Niagara Falls State Park, which is a nice alternative to the busy commercialized Canadian side of the falls.

Depending on your nationality, you may or may not need a visa to enter the U.S. If your country is listed on the Visa Waiver list, you do not need a visa to enter the U.S. If your country is not participating in the Visa Waiver program, you will need to apply for a B2 nonimmigrant tourist visa (you can apply at the border station and have it processed the same day, but it’s easier to pre apply). Visa or no visa, you will need to have ID with you to cross the border such as a passport. If you’re a Canadian citizen, you currently do not need a passport or a visa to enter the U.S. but will need a birth certificate or other form of ID.

  3. Niagra / Lewiston would be the closest boarder crossing. u don't need to have a US visa unless you have immigrated to Canada, then u would need proof of citizenship. its about 3-4 hours from Toronto. until 2009 u will need 2 forms of id like your drivers license and your birth certificate. after 2009 they will be asking for passports.

there is also the Windsor / Detroit crossing but that takes about 4 hours to get to from Toronto. there is also one out by Kingston. Michigan and Detroit (sorry for the spelling) also have a boarder on Ontario.

have been across the boarder several times.

  4. Buffalo, New York is the bordering state.  You should have your VISA or citizenship documents with you no matter what, because the border policy has become even more strict, so make sure you carry all your relevant ID with you.

    Enjoy!

  5. Whether or not you need a visa to enter the U.S. depends on your nationality.  You can see the Visa Waiver List at the site below.  If your home country is on that list, you do not need a visa.  if your home country is not on that list, you must apply for a B2 tourist visa from your home country.   See 2nd site. The U.S. state across the border from Toronto is New York.
