What parts are needed to do a Tune-Up?

Besides the spark plugs and air filters and stuff

I want to buy the parts myself then have a mechanic install them. It's a 1988 Lincoln Town Car and it does have fuel injection not a carburetor

  1. I'm assuming it's 5.0L V8.

    A full tune-up consists of:

    • New Spark Plugs

    • New Spark Plug wires

    • New Cap (top half)

    • New Rotor

    • New Air Filter

    • New Fuel Filter

    • Inspect all belts & hoses vacuum, coolant, & steering pressure

    • Check Rad level

    • Check Trans level

    • Check Brake fluid level

    • Lube hood hinges & latch

    • Lube door hinges & latches

    To check the timing

Go to this site & check that the wires are installed correctly.

If OK then remove the top of the distributor cap; line up timing marks to TDC.  Note the position of the rotor.  Should line up with #1 spark plug wire.  If it's 180° out, then turn the engine one complete revolution.  Turn the distributor to line with #1 spark plug wire.  Replace the cap.

    To set the timing:

Disconnect the SPOUT (Spark Output) ) [look for a small gray rectangular sensor below the LH hood hinge.  It's plugged into the wiring harness]

Start the engine & set the timing to manufacturer's specification

    Install the SPOUT connector.

  2. spark plugs, get good ones Bosch platnum etc, fuel filter, air filter, pcv filter and valve, a can of concentraited fuel injector cleaner for the tank, and possibly spark plugs, I believe your motor still has a distributer cap (2 piece design) replace the top piece. oil change and filter of course , the shop should check the belts etc . also concider replacing the gas cap.

  3. Fuel filter

    Air filter

    Spark plugs and wires

Distributor cap and rotor or ignition coil, whatever your car has

    Oil filter and oil

Many thigs can be replaced in a tune-up, but these are the most common, also tune-ups are very easy to do easy enough to do yourself if y ou want to save yourself some money. Otherwise your mechanic might charge you more being you are supplying the parts.
