What parts of a plastic bottle are recyclable (such as the rings, lids)? Do these things need to be removed?

all of the bottle can be recycled. just make sure you was them and remove the labels

Rings and lids are made of a different type of plastic and need to be removed. It's OK to leave a ring on once in while, but I understand that the lids can mess up a perfectly good batch of plastic recycling.

They're pretty much recycling everything but the labels.  Labels are going into landfills.  Reason being that, even though the labels especially on soft drink bottles are made from plastic, they also add clay to the label in order to be able to print on them.  This clay makes it very expensive (so far, impractical) to recycle labels.

You need to find out what kinds of plastics your local plant can recycle, it's based on a number imprinted on the bottom of plastic bottles like milk or bleach containers, only put bottles with the numbers indicated by your plant into your recycling bin. Turn the bottle over and on the bottom will be a number that's in a symbol that resembles a triangle with arrows on it. If you really want to put forth the effort you can remove the lids, rings, and paper labels from the bottles but don't really need to as the facility is equipt to do that type of sorting itself.
