  1. Butt, legs.

  2. Primarily it is a cardio excercise, so if you're looking to increase your stamina and lose weight, it's a good way to go.  As for working out a variety of muscle groups, there is not so much benefits.  It is weighs very heavily on the legs, and to some extent the shoulders and back, but doesn't really work the abs, arms, or chest per se.  Working out your back, shoulders, and abs certainly helps with cycling, but if your pirmary goal is to build muscles in these areas, it probably won't help you out too much.  It is simply too much of an aerobic exercise, if you want to actually build muscles, anaerobic exercise such as weight training may be a better route to go.

  3. When I started cycling I was slightly overweight.  Cycling got my entire body in shape.  I was amazed.  After a long ride my stomach and my arms felt more sore than my legs. Its a total body work out.  Did you just start riding?

  4. Bicycling helps your heart and lungs mainly -- and, as you've observed -- it hardens up your thighs.  It will strain your back and wreck your knees if you don't adjust your seat properly.
