  1. The top part of the ocean is warm.  The water gets colder the deeper it is.  Imagine you're a fish and you're swimming right at the ocean's surface.  As you swim down, the temperature of the water will decrease slowly.  After a while, you'll reach the thermocline, where the temperature decreases rapidly and you'll notice it get colder faster.  Passing the thermocline, the temperature will continue to decrease but at a very slow rate until you reach the bottom of the ocean.  Near the bottom, the temperature hardly changes at all.  The distance from the surface to the thermocline varies depending on a variety of factors, such as latitude, currents, the size of the water body, the depth of the water, etc, but for most places it's about 100 meters or less.
