  1. I have a yz250f (four stroke), my brother has a yz85 (two).  I ride three times more often than him and he does twice as much maintenance on his bike just to keep it running.  A four stroke tends to not foul or burn plugs like a two just for starters.  Between a 125 and 250f, I don't think anybody will disagree that the 250 will be more powerful.  On the flip side, a 250 two stroke is still more powerful than a 250 four but that's not your question.  Fours tend to have a more mellow power band (or just power the whole way), the two's have a certain rpm where they just come alive and throw your head back.  So in conclusion my vote is definitely for the 250 four stroke as far as fun and racing: more power, less maintenance, less power band transition.

  2. get yourself a nice KTM 125 SX if you've never rode before... start out with something smaller that you can get comfortable on and learn how to handle that way when you go up to the 250 you'll know what your doing rather than trying to learn on such a large bike.

  3. 125s are great bikes and there are millions of parts..in your life time you will never run out of parts for a 2-stroke...

If you were to rebuild a 2-stroke it would cost 100 bucks for top-end kit......Bottom around 300 bucks...Most of the time its a top-end kit..

If you were going to rebuild a 4-stroke your looking at thousands......Because most people cant do it there self...shop-rate is spendy......

I would get the 125........way cheap to buy and maintain

  4. Okay, let's get a few things straight here. First a 4 stroke race bike, like a 250F, is not tame. It will run circles around a 125. Second, a 125 2 stroke is a horrible bike for a new rider because of the narrow power band. Third, a 4 stroke cost's about twice as much as a 2 stroke to rebuild, but you rebuild them half as often so it all evens out. You cannot do more to a 2 stroke performance wise than a 4 stroke. If you want an inferior outdated machine then by all means purchase a 2 stroke 125.

  5. Well said Kato.

The 250cc 4 stroke is the way to go and as Kato has pointed out the 125cc 2 stroke is not as kind to a beginner rider.  They are definately outclassed when racing against the 250cc 4 strokes and for just knocking around on the 250cc 4 stroke shines again as you don't have the powerband to contend with.

Add to that the honda have already stopped production on their 125cc and have not done any development to the bikes that are around for about 5 years and you can see where all this is headed.

So even for resale value you would do better with the 4 stroke.

  6. what I love about two strokes the ability to get up and go and their is alot less maintanence on a two stroke the four strokes seem to tamed for me but thats me for just learning get a 125 which save you about a thousand dollars maybe more
