I need to know what pattern you use to crochet a headband or a beanie. For a headband, is it possible to join TWO DIFFERENT COLOURS of yarn and more to make stripes or weird patterns or do you have to buy ONE ROLL OF YARN THAT IS MULTICOLORED? I have a headband that is striped colours and it looks like it was made with separate rolls of string joined together somehow. PLEASE HELP! I REALLY need some help on how to joins separate yarns and make colourful odd patterned headbands mainly. Anybody who really helps me will get best answer!

  1. There are a couple of different ways to go about getting the different colors.

1 - tie on different colours as you go, just as you  suggested - you get the best result if you work the ends in as you go.  If you tie off the last color, then use a slip knot and a slip stitch to attach the next piece of yarn, it will be smoother than tying the separate pieces togethre with knots.

    2. you can use tapestry crochet technique - you carry along the different colors as you go and switch back and forth - this is the technique used in some peruvian crocheted items, such as hats.  this link is to a pattern as well as link to more detailed info about tapestry crochet.

  2. Try here and look through the list of patterns.  And check out the learn to crochet site on the left hand side of page.  Hope this has helped you.

  3. You can use different colors of yarn or you can get a skein of variegated yarn and use that.  Your choice.  If you choose to make your own mix, just cut the yarn of the first color and tie the next color yarn to it with a good stout square knot.  Leave long tails so you can hide them more easily later when you're finishing the piece.

If that's not enough help in adding colors go to www.lionbrand.com or www.coatsandclark.com and have a look at their tutorials.  They are free.   Check for patterns while you're there, too, if you like.

For more patterns, go to Google and type something like "crochet pattern beanie free" (or headband) into the searchbox when it comes up.
