I have seen people using gold & silver pens to highlight the edges of cards & toppers they have made. What pens do you think I should get as I havent seen any thick enough.

  1. Check out Zig pens. They are made for scrapbooking and card making.

You can also edge you cards using a silver or gold ink pad.

  2. Draw the lines three times ever so close together.

  3. Pentel do metallic gel pens in their Hybrid range - the ones called DX are a little broader than the others and are less likely to 'skip'. Pentel also do really good metallic brush pens but they are expensive.

You get a better gold with pigment pens such as Pilot's gold and silver markers which come in a extra fine, fine, medium and broad. They must be very well shaken and the nib pushed down a few times to start. Practice on a spare card first as they sometimes flow too fast at first. Pentel do a calligraphy version with a flat nib which might edge your cards well.

For a very fine edge flick your card on an ink stamp pad. A broader edge using an ink pad is hard to do evenly so drag it lightly over the edge a few times to get a more random effect with stronger colour right at the edge.

To do a lot of cards you can fan them out evenly and weight them down. Then paint the exposed edge, leave to dry, and repeat on the other 3 sides. I found the ink tended to run underneath but I only tried it once and might not have put enough weight on.

Chalking is also a very good edging. It looks like eye shadow and is applied with a cosmetic sponge - and no it doesn't come off. There are some less expensive sets on the market now, Dovecrafts are very good.

  4. go to a hardware store or auto store and get paint pens. like touch up paint but pens.....

  5. I cover the card with a piece of cardboard, except where I want the border to go. Then I paint it on with a paintbrush, or I use a metallic ink pad and just turn it upside down and run it over the edge.

    .

  6. you should be able to get flat tip pens in a good art/stationery store.

You can even buy a calligrapher's flat-tip pen with various colored inks. they even come in different widths.

other "cheaper" & instant options include :

use a fluorescent marker [with thick/flat nib] to line the border. you can then "decorate" it further with other colored pens/ paints/sequins/polka dots/ glitter pens....

on a transparency sheet cut out stencils of the borders using different lengths & breadths. depending on which size you require for a particular card, place that border along the edge & color in or paint with any normal pens you have. these can be used again & again any number of times. once the stencil is made, you don't even need to measure or buy any new type of stationery....

    hope these ideas help

    all the best
