  1. my son is nonverbal and my friend's daughter is also nonverbal.

  2. Most of them are.  It is a criteria to be diagnosed, those that communicate well really have Aspergers, not Autism, and have prob been misdiagnosed or diagnosed before Aspergers caught on.

  3. I work with special needs adults as a speech therapist. I have found that 50% of people with autism are nonverbal, but that doesn't mean they can't communicate. Everyone communicates ie. behaviors, facial expressions, sign language, language boards, gestures, vocalizations, and verbalizations.

  4. I just went to a conference, where the speaker said approximately 50% of kids with autism are nonverbal. It is not a criteria that they do not speak to get a diagnosis, it is a criteria that they have trouble communicating, which could include verbal kids who don't know HOW to talk, how to find the words that they need to communicate (hence the verbal stims and scripting) etc.

Good luck. I have a girl who was nonverbal until she was four.

  5. well im not sure how many but for them to be nonverbal it must be pretty bad and autism is common i hear about people having it all the time its just you may not even notice because its not always very bad. my cousin has autism and his is mild he can still talk go to school, but when he was little his parents didnt know he had it so when he wasnt able to learn how to talk as fast as he should or learn how to walk that was because of the autism. Autism really just slows a persons reaction if they dont have it bad. and example would be is like my cousin when he talks he will studder alot. and its hard for him to learn because like i was saying it just slows his brain down. but then again he doesnt have it as bad as he could. some people with autism cant talk and it seems as if they have down syndrome but i dont know every thing about it but that is what i do no, ok bibi sry if i didnt answer your question. :)

  6. In my house, 100%.  I have twin 5 year olds who have autism that only speak a fleeting word here or there.  We are hoping that more language comes.

  7. not really sure  but you can help them by doing sign language and talking and it will help with their frustration of not being able to talk. and control the tantrums
