I am feeling rather rich as I have in my pocket 7 one pound coins. I noticed that two of the seven are dated 1983. This seems rather high to me, to have 2 from the original year of issue. So it got me wondering how many of the 1983 issued coins are still around and what percentage of the total issued are dated from 1983.

  1. 1983 was the first year of minting, with 443 million minted. The next 25 years have seen about 1.37 billion more, so thats about 1.8 billion total.  Doing the math about  24.6 % were minted in 1983.  I get hundreds at a time and that seems about right 1/5 - 1/3 are 1983s with the average around 1/4. .
