  1. Based on what you report, and considering that there may be unknown quantities in there, your approximate heritage would be as follows.

If by Spanish you mean Spanish from Spain and count it as white, you would be 4/16 white (25%), 9/16 black (56%), and 3/16 Native American (19%).

If by Spanish you mean Mexican and count it as Native American, you would be 3/16 white (19%), 9/16 black (56%), and 4/16 Native American (25%).

But since it is very unlikely that either of your grandpas was 100% black, given the conditions that prevailed back in the bad old days, you are probably not more than 50% black.

Does that help at all? Rounding it off, you might want to say half black, about one-quarter white and one-quarter Indian. What would be really fascinating would be to do one of those DNA analyses that track down the regional origins of your genes.

The testing of maternal-line DNA was featured in "African American Lives 2," a four-part series looking at the histories of prominent African Americans, including Maya Angelou, Morgan Freeman, Tina Turner, Chris Rock and Don Cheadle. The series is hosted by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. It's a follow-up to the 2006 television series "African American Lives" and the "Oprah's Roots" program of last year.

The tests that Moore and Griffith had are available for $189 apiece through African DNA (www.africandna.com), a company founded by Gates last November to offer genetic and genealogical research for African Americans. Such research typically follows a paper trail back to about 1870, when former slaves' full names began to be recorded by the U.S. Census. Further back, the paper trail generally grows cold, and that's where DNA testing can pick up the heritage trail.

Although the information is sparse, it can be a starting point for discovering more.

For the African DNA enterprise, Gates enlisted historians and anthropologists to evaluate results to come up with the most likely analysis.

Despite its limitations, DNA testing does illuminate aspects of race and identity. First, it makes clear that human beings have mixed their DNA across every physical border and cultural boundary.

On Gates' program, Chris Rock learns he's about 20 percent European. Tina Turner finds out she's about a third European.

  2. You're a great mix of cultures.. I'm not sure of percentages but you certainly have alot of interesting cultures to draw from ;-)

  3. Looks like your Mom and Dad are each about 50% Black.

So, I would say that you are:

    about 50% Black

    about 25% American Indian

    about 25% European - Russian/German/Spanish

    In other words, 100% American!

  4. 100% human.

  5. Well, with those things you just said, it sounds like you're 52% black, roughly 20% Native American and the remaining would be the Russian, German and Spanish. But that's very rough since we don't know exaclty how much of the other cultures were in your ancestors.

  6. Your a mutt.  A Heinz 57.  We can't give you percentages, because you didn't give us percentages.  Your grandmother is "sum" Spanish...how much is "sum"???

    1/2?, 1/16??  None at all?
