Realizing it may vary, what is the average percentage of a boat that is underwater?

  7. this depends on the the design of the boat.  a loaded  ship can have a draft of 14 meters or more, with just a few meters of freeboard at the weather deck.  a bassboat will have maybe a 1 foot of the hull in the water while sitting still, but when on a plane only an inch or so may be in the water.  sailboats with a heavy displacement type hull will have a larger percentage of its hull under water, but a planning hull, like a melges 24 will have much less of its hull underwater.
