  1. Some don't even know what they want because of mental problems and/or drug or alcohol abuse. In other words, they are not able to make the best decisions for themselves, because their health has been compromised. (Not all, but many). There are many different reasons I'm sure why many are homeless. I truly believe in many cases it is because they don't feel loved or they may not have been able to get the help they needed to overcome whatever difficulties. Not sure about the statistics though...haven't done that precise research...just putting some of my thoughts/opinions in.

  2. Often it is not the decision to be homeless but something else that creates the problem.  About 25% suffer from some form of mental illness and can't function many more are drug addicted.

The issues is not how may are homeless but how we will help them move beyond this.

  3. A few are so far gone they're barely coherent, but even they will respond to a helping hand with gratitude. Every homeless person I've met wants basically the  same thing anyone wants- dignity, respect. A lot of them lack skills to do positive things for themselves because no one cared enough to teach them things that could help. Nobody decides to be homeless- you see it coming but you can't do anything about it and before you know it you're planning how to survive a temporary situation- for some it becomes less temporary. Imagine- what could you possibly do without  clean clothes, money, an address, ID cards, or a phone? Loss of any combination of these things will make changing your circumstances very difficult.

  4. 90% do not want ot be. It is a tough life. That doesn't mean that they all have the opportunity or ability to change their circumstances.
