Hi, I'm using a new Mac, but I usually have alot of programs or downloads running, so I put it on screensaver or I put it to sleep over night.

What I want to know is, how much of my energy is being used by it overnight?

I read somewhere it was around 10%, but it wasn't specific enough. It just said if you leave your computer on...

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks.

  1. I am not sure what model Mac you have but if you go to Energy Star website you can find out if your computer is listed there. On desktops units the max is saw in the sleep mode was 3 watts and 22.8 watts in idle mode A or 57.4 watts in idle mode B. So if you left it in idle mode B for 24 hours you would use 1377 watts or 1.377 kilowatt which equal about 16 cents a day.

Check out the website below. It will take you to the computers section of the website. look on the right side and you will see "For Consumers" under that you will find a product list for computers in an excel format.

While you there check out other electronics you might have that are pulling electricity even when they are off. your TV might be using more watts than your computer. You might want to buy a power strip with an on/off switch to plug the TV into and turn it off when your not using the TV.

  2. Very little really.

  3. less than 10%

apple macs efficient products and it states on its website

"power savings of 92% in sleep-mode"

so i assume 8% of normal energy usage
