According to 'An Irish Life' "The size of the world’s community who claim Irish ancestry is open to many interpretations but has been estimated at some 70 million people."

The Sunday Business Post Online mentions the same figure in reference to Brian Cowen's proposal "to embrace people of Irish descent "

"presumably for people of Irish heritage, we could see our potential workforce increase from four million to 70 million."

The current world population stands at around 6.7 billion, so by my reckoning this make the Irish population + the Irish diaspora roughly about 1% of the world population.
